Welcome to Qaqqalik School!
We are a kindergarten - grade 12 school located in Kimmirut, Nunavut. Our students are supported by a staff of about 13 members. Our staff are dedicated, professional and wonderful individuals.
Inuuqatigiit and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ Principles) are the foundations of schooling in Nunavut. Encouraging our students' growth and development is at the heart of what we do. We want our school to be a place where students learn how to make sense of their world and act to change it. We do this by encouraging our students to think critically.
We collaborate with the Kimmirut DEA (District Education Authority), Elders, the community and parents/guardians to ensure our classrooms are learning communities. Learning strategies at our school include developing our students' co-operative skills so they can improve their self-expression, conflict resolution, problem solving and communication.
If you are a new hire, we look forward to meeting you soon. If you are a job seeker, parent or casual visitor, we also welcome you and hope you find our school profile useful and informative.
To create a safe, positive environment where all individuals have equal opportunity to grow and learn by building on each others' strengths and values. We also seek to promote resiliency and diversity in our ever-changing world of traditional and contemporary lifestyles.
We currently have about 135 students, however this figure can fluctuate slightly throughout the school year. Our students are Inuit and Inuktitut is the first language for the majority of them. English is typically spoken as a second language. Our students are fun-loving, curious and wonderful individuals who attend school wanting to learn.

The school follows the curriculum set by the Nunavut Department of Education to ensure students meet the necessary requirements to graduate.
We use the qulliq language of instruction model at our school. With this model, teachers use Inuktitut to instruct all subjects from kindergarten to grade three. Beginning in grade four, teachers use English as a language of instruction and their use of English for instruction gradually increases over the later grades. However, Inuktitut is still used significantly.
The Nunavut Department of Education website has more information about the various language of instruction models.
Qaqqalik School also provides other types of programming for our students, such as the traditional land-week program (for high school students) and the cod fishing program.
